Pope Benedict XVI’s four-day visit to Great Britain is both significant and historic. The first pope to visit England in almost 500 years, the Holy Father has a full schedule beginning with a 10-hour visit to Scotland, followed by a meeting with Queen Elizabeth, several public appearances, and a Mass and the beatification of Cardinal John Henry Newman, a 19th century theologian and one of England’s most respected religious figures, who converted from Anglicanism to Catholicism. At the Mass, it is expected that the Pope will announce the Cardinal Newman’s feast day to be October 9, the date of his conversion.

Catholic News Service is providing coverage of the Holy Father’s visit in written and video news stories that are available on the Diocesan web site, accessed by the CNS Video button on the right side of the home page. There you will find stories on the Holy Father’s session with the media regarding the sex abuse crisis and his reception in Scotland. Additional stories will be posted to the CNS Video site during the remainder of his visit and in the days following. You can also access CNS coverage online at www.catholicnews.com.
