Bishop Burbidge Dedicates New Facilities at St. Francis of Assisi
On Sunday, April 25th, after celebrating Mass at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Raleigh, the Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge dedicated Assisi Community Center and Our Lady of the Angels Chapel. These newest structures on the St. Francis Campus complete part two of a three-phase expansion effort by the parish, which will culminate in the building of a Lifelong Learning Center as soon as funds are sufficient.
The Community Center will accommodate social, athletic and cultural activities, and includes a gymnasium, senior center, youth room, kitchen, reception area and lounge.
Our Lady of the Angels Chapel will provide a small, sacred space in the heart of the parish campus where daily Eucharist will be celebrated. Faith Formation and Franciscan School students will use the Chapel for prayer. It will also be a venue for meditation, centering, Rosary and other prayer groups, as well as parish retreats, small weddings, funerals and liturgical prayer.
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™ was the benchmark for design, construction and operation of both buildings, which incorporate features that will save energy and resources, provide a better indoor environment and minimize negative effects on the environment.
An afternoon-long festival planned and staffed by St. Francis parishioners followed the dedication.
