August 4 marks the Memorial of Saint John Vianney, Patron of all Priests. On that day, Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge will celebrate Mass in commemoration of Saint Vianney at Sacred Heart Cathedral at 12:00 PM. The liturgy continues the Diocesan observance of the Year for Priests. It will also mark the third anniversary of Bishop Burbidge’s installation as Bishop of Raleigh.

During the Mass, the Bishop will bless a statue of Saint John Vianney that will travel to the eight deaneries of the Diocese throughout the year for Masses and other liturgical prayer.

Saint John Vianney died in 1859 at the age of 73. He was canonized May 31, 1925. In honor of the 150th anniversary of his death, Pope Benedict XVI announced in March that during this year he will proclaim the Saint “Patron of all Priests.” Previously, Saint John Vianney was deemed the Patron of Diocesan Priests.
