USCCB Committees Call for Action in Response to Newtown
The Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge has voiced his support of the statement issued December 21, 2012, by the chairmen of three committees of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishop in the aftermath of the school shootings in Newtown, Conn.
In the statement titled “Call For Action In Response To Newtown Tragedy,” Bishop Stephen E. Blaire of Stockton, Chair of Domestic Justice and Human Development; Bishop John C. Wester of Salt Lake City, Chair of Communications; and Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades of Fort Wayne-South Bend, Chair of Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth, called on all Americans to address national policies that will strengthen regulations of firearms and improve access to health care for those with mental health needs.
The bishops write that it is time for the nation to return to values that foster a “culture of life.” In their letter, they call on the entertainment industry to address the proliferation of violence in its films and broadcast programs and evaluate its impact in society.
