Annual Mass Pays Tribute to Milestone Wedding Anniversaries
On Sunday, October 14, 2012, 122 couples from all the deaneries of the Diocese of Raleigh celebrated milestone anniversaries in 2012 by joining the Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge for the sixth annual Wedding Anniversary Mass. The Mass, celebrated this year at St. Mark Catholic Church in Wilmington, honors couples who have been married 25, 50 and 50-plus years. Those in attendance represented a total of 5,795 years of marriage. Thirteen of the couples have been married more than 60 years. Nearly 40 more couples attended this year than in 2011.
In his homily, Bishop Burbidge said that the occasion was a celebration of “God’s infinite goodness and our faithful response.”
“Your faithful married love is a precious gift to the entire Church,” the Bishop told the couples, “because it symbolizes the love the Lord has for each one of us -- a love that is permanent, life-giving and that never counts the cost.” And to all those assembled, he said, “I believe...the best way we can honor these married couples today is to renew our promise to be faithful to the vocation God has entrusted to us.”
A reception and photographs with the Bishop followed the Mass.
