Catholic Officials Discuss Church's AIDS Outreach
Major religious and non-profit organizations are in Washington, DC, for the annual International AIDS Conference. A United Nations official warned that any organization that placed restrictions on providing service based on religious belief could result in that agency receiving reduced support from funders. The official was referring to religious organizations that have positions against the promotion and distribution of condoms.
Catholic leaders attending the conference defended their efforts in fighting the worldwide AIDS pandemic, affirming that their work will continue to be guided by religious principles. They noted that their care also involves addressing the needs of the whole person with an emphasis on compassion.
