Bishop Burbidge Encourages Faithful to Contact Legislators
In a letter to the faithful of the Diocese of Raleigh, the Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge encouraged Catholics to contact their legislators indicating support of The Respect for Rights of Conscience Act before both Houses of Congress (S. 1467 and H.R. 1179).
This Act “will correct and provide a remedy to the serious threat to our religious liberty and conscience rights contained in the current mandate [of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services requiring insurance coverage for abortifacient drugs, sterilization and contraception] by ensuring that those who participate in the health care system ‘retain the right to provide, purchase, or enroll in health coverage that is consistent with their religious beliefs and moral convictions,’” the Bishop wrote.
The Bishop asked that the faithful “keep updated on the current status of these efforts, which seek to overturn the portions of the mandate that are objectionable to our beliefs, principles and rights, not only as Catholics, but as citizens of this great nation.”
Concerned Catholics and others may contact their legislators directly or via the Catholic Voice NC website at http://www.catholicvoicenc.org/, where they will find more detailed information on the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act.
