Bishop Burbidge Celebrates Mass of the Lord’s Supper
The Easter Triduum marks three days in which the faithful prayerfully reflect upon the ultimate sacrifice of love that God has given to each of us, through the passion, death and resurrection of His Son.
The Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge commemorated the Passion of Our Lord with the celebration of the Mass of the Lord’s Supper at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Raleigh.
Bishop Burbidge, in his homily, noted that at the Last Supper, Jesus instituted the Holy Eucharist and the Priesthood. Reflecting on the Eucharist, the Bishop said, “Every time we do this in memory of Him: Christ’s death is renewed. Every time we receive His body and blood, we are nourished and sustained by the One alone who satisfies our hunger for peace, quenches our thirst for truth and allows us to share His very life both now and forever.”
Bishop Burbidge spoke of the uniqueness of the day’s Gospel reading from John, in which “it does not include the familiar words of the institution of the Eucharist. Instead, by highlighting the washing of the feet at the Last Supper,” Bishop Burbidge said, “the evangelist compels us to remember the challenge the Eucharist contains for each one of us. We must imitate the One whose body and blood we receive.
