The Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge has applauded the decision by Governor Pat McCrory to sign into law Senate Bill 353 that protects the health of women who choose to undergo an abortion. Bishop Burbidge said, “This is definitely a pro-woman bill. It is designed to ensure the health and well-being of all those involved, but most importantly the women, to guarantee that required care that is needed is present at all times.”
The law also provides for conscience protection for any medical professional whose moral or religious belief prevents them from participating in an abortion procedure. In addition, the legislation requires the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services to establish guidelines similar to those required of ambulatory surgical centers in the state and make it mandatory that a doctor be present during any type of abortion procedure.
“While we pray for the day when there is no longer a need for any clinic that performs abortions, this bill is a positive step,” Bishop Burbidge said. “But there is more to be done. We will continue to witness, advocate, educate and most importantly pray for the protection of all human life. Our work is ongoing.”
The Bishop expressed his gratitude for the work of members of the State House and Senate for their support of the legislation and to the Catholic faithful who, through their prayer, telephone and email requests to lawmakers and the Governor, helped support the success of this legislation.
