Bishop Celebrates Consecrated Life, Honors Sister Jubilarians
On Saturday, February 4, 2012, the Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge celebrated Mass at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Raleigh to recognize the World Day for Consecrated Life, and to honor two vowed women religious in our Diocese: Sister Maria Goretti Timperio, IHM, and Sister Rita Finnen, DW, who have worked for 60 years each to bring God’s love to His people.

Cardinal Gibbons Breaks Ground on Expansion Project
On February 2, 2012, Thursday of Catholic Schools Week, Cardinal Gibbons High School (CGHS) together with the Most Rev. Michael F. Burbidge, Bishop of Raleigh, broke ground on a $15.5 million “Building the Vision” expansion and renovation project that will equip the school with additional classrooms, athletics and arts facilities and a new entrance, as well as the latest in technology to help educate new generations of students.

Bishop Concludes Catholic Schools Week Visits in Fayetteville
On Friday, February 3, 2012, the last school day of Catholic Schools Week, the Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge concluded a week of pastoral visits to Catholic schools in Fayetteville, NC. He began the day by celebrating Mass at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Fayetteville for students of St. Patrick Catholic School. Concelebrating were Msgr. Michael Shugrue, Pastor of St. Patrick and Fr. Rafael Leon-Valencia, St. Patrick Parochial Vicar. In attendance, in addition to the St. Patrick students, were eighth graders from St. Ann Catholic School in Fayetteville and Pope John Paul II Catholic School in Southern Pines.

Catholic Schools Week: The Franciscan School, Raleigh
The Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge marked Catholic Schools Week with pastoral visits to schools in various parts of the Diocese. Tuesday morning, January 31, found the Bishop at The Franciscan School (TFS) of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Raleigh. He celebrated Mass for the teachers and students of TFS, which was recognized this year by the U.S. Department of Education as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence.

Catholic Schools Week: St. Mark School, Wilmington
The Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge marked Catholic Schools Week with pastoral visits to schools in various parts of the Diocese. On Monday, January 30, the Bishop visited St. Mark Catholic School in Wilmington, NC, where he blessed construction underway to expand the 400-student school. The expansion will add six new classrooms, a gym and a stage to the school, and will be ready for the 2012-2013 academic year.

Papal Honors Conferred on 20 Diocesan Faithful
The Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge presented Papal Honors to 20 men and women in the Diocese of Raleigh during Solemn Vespers at St. Michael the Archangel Church in Cary, Tuesday, December 6. The Honors were bestowed by Pope Benedict XVI. Four of the honorees were awarded the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Cross, the highest award of the Roman Catholic Church given to the Laity. Sixteen or the honorees were presented with the Benemerenti Medal in recognition of their dedicated service to the Church.

Our Lady of the Snows Parish in Elizabethtown, NC, celebrated its 70th anniversary on the First Sunday of Advent, November 27. Our Lady of the Snows is the only Catholic Church in Bladen County. Bishop Burbidge Celebrates All Saints & All Souls Day Masses
The Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge celebrated Mass on the Feast of All Souls Day at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Newton Grove. The outdoor Mass was conducted at an altar near the burial site of Bishop Vincent S. Waters, third Bishop of Raleigh. Sixteen diocesan priests are also buried in the parish cemetery. The Mass was concelebrated by Msgr. David D. Brockman, Vicar General of the Diocese, and 20 priests serving in the Diocese.

Holy Spirit Conference Calls Hundreds to Holiness
Nearly 600 people, including more than 230 youth, attended the sixth annual Holy Spirit Conference sponsored by Catholic Charismatic Services in the Diocese of Raleigh. The weekend event, with the theme “A Call to Holiness,” began Friday night, October 28, 2011, at the North Raleigh Hilton, and featured prayer, music, Eucharistic adoration, a healing service and teaching from nationally known speakers. The Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge was the principal celebrant and homilist at the closing Mass on Sunday.

St. Catherine of Siena Breaks Ground for New Church
On Saturday, October 22, 2011, St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Wake Forest broke ground for its new church. The Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge blessed the ground and presided at the groundbreaking, followed by a Mass of Thanksgiving at the outdoor chapel on the parish grounds. Concelebrating with Bishop Burbidge were Fr. Philip Tighe, Pastor of St. Catherine, and Fr. Brendan Buckler, St. Catherine’s Parochial Vicar. The Bishop delivered the homily.

Catholic Convocation 2011
Approximately 800 people took part in the annual Diocesan Catholic Convocation Saturday, October 15, 2011, held at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh. The day-long event featured some 70 workshops on a variety of topics, many of them focusing on the 2011 theme, “Love and Life in the Divine Plan,” the title of a Pastoral Letter on Marriage issued by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) in 2009.

Diocese Celebrates Annual Hispanic Heritage Mass
The annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration, held Saturday, October 8, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Chapel Hill, NC, drew nearly 1000 people from the diverse Hispanic cultures in the Diocese of Raleigh. This year the celebration took the theme “Papa Peregrino, Camina Conmigo” (“Pilgrim Pope, Walk With Me”) in honor of Blessed Pope John Paul II.

Blessing of Animals Held at St. Francis of Assisi Parish
On Saturday, October 1, the Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge joined the Franciscan Friars of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Raleigh for the annual Blessing of the Animals ceremony. Parishioners brought pets of all sizes, and the younger children even brought their stuffed animals to the celebration. After hymns, prayer and Scripture readings, the Bishop and the Friars sprinkled the animals and their owners with blessed water.

World Youth Day Pilgrims Return to Diocese
At 7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 22, 2011, a weary but elated group of youth and young adult pilgrims from the Diocese of Raleigh landed at RDU International Airport. Friends and family, some holding balloons, were waiting with hugs for the pilgrims, who had left on August 12 on a 10-day journey that took them to the Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in France and then on to World Youth Day 2011 in Madrid, Spain.

World Youth Day participants from the Diocese of Raleigh departed Friday, August 12, on the first leg of their 10-day pilgrimage that will take them to Our Lady of Lourdes Shrine in France and then on to World Youth Day 2011 in Madrid, Spain. 18 Confirmed at Holy Trinity Anniversary Mass
On Sunday, June 19, the Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge conferred the Sacrament of Confirmation on 18 members of Holy Trinity Parish, Williamston; St. Joan of Arc Parish, Plymouth; and the Catholic Community of Bertie County. The Confirmations took place during a special bilingual Mass of Thanksgiving marking the 50th Anniversary of Holy Trinity Parish and the 60th anniversary of the Catholic presence in Martin County.

Bishop Burbidge Confirms 2,100 Youth
In 2011, Most Reverend Bishop Michael F. Burbidge conferred the Sacrament of Confirmation on 2,100 youth aged 13 to 18. The Confirmation ceremonies were held at 28 locations, and the confirmands represented parishes from all the deaneries in the Diocese. Confirmation is the last Sacrament of Initiation. Through the Sacrament, the faithful receive the Holy Spirit and become adult members of the Church.

Bishop Celebrates Baccalaureate Mass for High School Graduates
On Sunday, May 29, Cardinal Gibbons Catholic High School held its 2010-2011 commencement ceremony at Meymandi Hall in Raleigh for 295 students receiving diplomas. Two days earlier, Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge, Bishop of Raleigh, celebrated the class of 2011’s Baccalaureate Mass at St. Thomas More Church in Chapel Hill. The attendance exceeded 1,500, with standing room only in the Church, the large gathering space filled to capacity and more than 300 people watching the Mass on closed-circuit television in the new parish hall.

More than 90 couples from throughout the Diocese, celebrating milestone anniversaries in 2011, joined the Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge Sunday, May 15 for the fifth annual Wedding Anniversary Mass. The Mass, celebrated at St. Peter Church in Greenville, honors couples who have been married, 25, 50 and 50-plus years. The total number of married years of those in attendance exceeded 3,800.

They came from large parishes and small, from across the Diocese of Raleigh, for the Diocesan Pilgrimage to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Basilica officials estimate approximately 2,000 men, women and children attended the one-day pilgrimage on Saturday, April 2, joining with the Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge for a day of prayer, Rosary, a Holy Hour and Holy Mass.

2011 March for Life in Washington, D.C.
Catholics from the Diocese of Raleigh and the Diocese of Charlotte traveled to the nation’s capital for the annual North Carolina Mass, which was celebrated at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception at 11:30 AM. Bishop Burbidge was the Principal Celebrant. Bishop Peter J. Jugis of Charlotte was Principal Concelebrant and homilist. Following the Mass, North Carolina Catholics joined the Bishops in the Annual March for Life down Constitution Avenue to the U.S. Supreme Court.

St. Luke Teens Wash Feet at Moore Square Park
For the second year in a row, St Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church high school youth ministry set out on “Mission Possible,” a weeklong service trip ministering in downtown Raleigh. In many Catholic Churches throughout the world, traditional Good Friday services include the Veneration of the Cross, a ceremony in which the faithful pay respect to the cross on which Jesus was crucified. In most churches, the service is held at 3:00 PM, the time of Jesus’ death. Veneration is performed by individuals kneeling, kissing or touching the cross. The Most Reverend Michael F. A group of 11 medical professional left Greenville this afternoon en route to a Saint Damien of Molokai Hospital in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The group put together by Dr. Greg Murphy, a urologist and general surgeon in Pitt County, includes two general practitioners; two orthopedic specialists, two Ear, Nose and Throat specialists, an anesthesiologist, two nurses and a staff support person. In addition to Dr. Murphy, five members of the team are parishioners at St. Peter Church in Greenville, which is administered by the Passionist Religious Order.

Hadden was ordained in Rome in 1958 as a Priest of the Diocese of Raleigh upon his graduation from the North American College in Rome. Rev. Msgr. Thomas P. Hadden celebrated his Fiftieth Anniversary of Priesthood with a Jubilee Mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral on Saturday, December 20. Msgr. In the Diocese of Raleigh, wind and rain failed to discourage worshipers who gathered at more than 30 churches to celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. At St. Michael the Archangel Church in Cary, the Hispanic community arrived at 4:30 am for a procession and prayer, then filled the church to overflowing for Mass in Spanish celebrated by Father Michael Spurr, with the Rev. Into the Fields
On August 3-8, 2008, twenty-six parish catechists and Catholic school teachers across the Diocese of Raleigh participated in the "Into the Fields" formation program. Seventeen participants received certificates of completion in their third year of the week long format held at Christian Family Living Center, Topsail Beach. The program consists of three components: lessons from the Catechism of the Catholic Church, spiritual and personal growth, and teaching methods- all of which assist catechists and teachers to be confident and competent in their catechetical ministry. "Into the Fields" was funded by the Mary Dowling Endowment for Catechist Formation.

On the Feast of our Lady of Guadalupe, St. Bernadette Church in Fuquay-Varina was a wedding site for 40 men and women who had longed, some for decades, for a Catholic wedding. The Mexican couples, some of whom had been married civilly for years, were wed at a Spanish Mass celebrated by St. Bernadette’s Parochial Vicar, Fr. Marco-Antonio Gonzalez, the first native Mexican priest in the diocese of Raleigh, and their unions were blessed by Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge, Bishop of Raleigh.

New Annunciation School Dedicated
A dream came true for Annunciation Parish in Havelock on Sunday, Oct. 28, when Bishop Michael F. Burbidge blessed and dedicated its new parish school. The dedication was the culmination of efforts by the parish and the Diocese of Raleigh to finance and build the sparkling new facility, which will accommodate students in pre-school through 8th Grade, and includes a Media Center, Computer Lab, Science Lab, Art Room and gym.

Chrism Mass
Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge celebrates his first Chrism Mass since becoming Bishop of Raleigh. The Chrism Mass is celebrated during Holy Week and incorporates the Rite of the Blessing of the Holy Oils and Consecration of the Sacred Chrism. The oils and chrism are used by parishes throughout the year for Baptism, Confirmation, Anointing of the Sick, and for the Sacrament of Holy Orders.

Handicapped Encounter Christ Spring 2007 Retreat
The annual spring retreat for Handicapped Encounter Christ (HEC) was held March 30-April 1 at Short Journey Retreat Center in Smithfield, with approximately 100 men and women taking part. HEC is a Christian organization open to people of all faiths. Developed in New York in 1974, it was brought to North Carolina in 1983 by a small group of Catholics who realized that traditional retreats were not reaching everyone. HEC retreats are designed to spiritually enrich all participants while also meeting the needs of adults with physical disabilities.
