Year of Faith and Ecumenism
Pope Benedict XVI invited His Holiness, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and The Most Reverend Dr. Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury to be present at the papal Mass for the opening of the Year of Faith. Both men also spoke at the recent Synod of Bishops. This certainly is an indication of the importance of our ecumenical involvement since the Second Vatican Council.
Since 1967 the Commission on Faith and Order of the World Council of Churches and the Pontifical Council for Christian Unity has jointly prepared the material for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is observed from January 18th to the 25th.
On a national basis, materials for the celebration of the Week of Prayer are the work of Graymoor Ecumenical & Interreligious Institute in collaboration with the Commission on Faith and Order of the National Council of Churches and the Catholic Bishops' Commission for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs.
The Graymoor Ecumenical & Interreligious has prepared material for the celebration of this year’s Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. You will find prayer services, prayers of the faithful and musical suggestions at their web site.
January 18-25, 2013 is the annual observance of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. The theme chosen for 2013 is "What Does God Require of Us?" (cf. Micah 6: 6-8). Throughout 2013, join Christians everywhere in praying "that they may all be one" joining our prayer with that the Lord Jesus Christ.
The Ecumenical Commission’s Committee on Spiritual Ecumenism has been meeting with members of other Christian Churches in preparing an Ecumenical Service for a Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.
The Most Reverend Michael Burbidge, Bishop of Raleigh, and the Most Reverend Hope Morgan Ward, Bishop of the United Methodist Church of North Carolina, will participate in the Ecumenical Service along with other clergy. Holy Cross Roman Catholic Gospel Choir will join in the celebration.
This Ecumenical Service of the Word will be held on Tuesday evening, January 22, 2013, at 7 PM at:
