St. George Trek

2020 St. George Trek

Due to the extensive damage done by wildfires at the Philmont Scout Ranch, the 2019 St. George Trek has been postponed to July 2020.

Philmont Scout Ranch
Cimarron, New Mexico
July 2020 (specific dates to be announced)
Additional information can be obtained at: https://www.nccs-bsa.org/index.php/june18-stg.

What

The St. George Trek is a biennial, high adventure, backpacking retreat program for Catholic Scouts and Venture Crew members, administered by the National Catholic Committee on Scouting. The program begins and ends in Albuquerque, New Mexico, however the hike itself takes place at the Philmont Scout Ranch.

Purpose

Philmont’s high adventure backpacking experience is placed within the context of a retreat program dedicated to assisting a scout’s awareness of his or her Christian vocation with a particular emphasis of vocations of priesthood and religious life. The adult advisors are therefore priests, religious men & women, and seminarians, and they will walk with the scouts on the trail. The presence of the advisors on the trail gives the scouts an opportunity to experience the sacraments and the church’s life of prayer on a daily basis as they hike through “God’s Country” at Philmont in the Sangre de Cristo (Blood of Christ) range of the Rocky Mountains.

Qualifications

The Diocese of Raleigh will nominate up to two Boy Scouts, Sea Scouts, or Venture Crew Members for participation in the trek. Candidates must be 15 years of age (on or before 7/1/2020) and meet minimum maturity, physical, and leadership requirements that can be found on the weblink below. No exceptions can be made.

Fees

The Diocese of Raleigh has agreed to fund the $900 cost of attending the trek, which covers the Philmont Scout Ranch fees, retreat house lodging in Albuquerque, meals, and round-trip chartered bus travel between Albuquerque and Philmont. Each candidate is required to cover their own transportation costs to/from Albuquerque, NM, personal gear, and any personal expenses.

Application

Interested candidates MUST submit a letter of interest of no greater than one and one-half pages, stating, 1) why they believe they are qualified to attend, 2) what they expect to get out of the St. George Trek, and 3) how they intend to apply what they receive from trek participation in their diocese, parish, scouting unit, and personal life. Submissions must include name, address, phone number, date of birth, email address, Scouting unit, parish name and city. Letters of interest must be sent to: fjackson@saintandrew.org, or sent via US Mail to: St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church, c/o Frank Jackson, 3008 Old Raleigh Road, Apex, NC 27502. Due to the tight deadlines for application, letters of interest must be received and cannot be accepted after September 15, 2019. All letters of interest will be reviewed by the Raleigh Diocese Catholic Committee on Scouting, and successful candidates will be advised no later than October 1, 2019.
