Bishop Burbidge celebrates Mass, remembers deceased priests

On Friday, Nov. 4, Bishop Michael F. Burbidge celebrated the annual Mass for deceased priests and others at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Newton Grove.

Traditionally celebrated at an outdoor altar in the parish cemetery, the Mass was celebrated in the church due to weather. The Mass commemorated the deceased bishops, priests, deacons, women religious and lay faithful of the Diocese of Raleigh.

More than 30 priests, including Father Kevin Moley, C.Ss.R., pastor, and Father Mark Wise, CSs.R., parochial vicar, concelebrated.

High school students and educators from Cardinal Gibbons High School (Raleigh), St. Thomas More Academy (Raleigh) and St. John Paul II High School (Greenville) traveled to Newton Grove to attend.

St. Thomas More Academy students sang in choir; other students served as readers, gift bearers and altar servers.

After Mass, Bishop Burbidge blessed gravestones, including the markers for Bishop Vincent S. Waters and Bishop F. Joseph Gossman. During the blessings, the faithful prayed the Litany of the Saints.

“When we go out in procession, we remember we are on an earthly journey. No matter how young or old, we all share the same goal: the final destination to get to heaven and live with God forever,” Bishop Burbidge said.

He added: “We pray today that we leave here with a renewed trust in God’s promises. Our God who is always faithful so that we continue this earthy journey - with its crosses, with its setbacks, with its obstacles - in joyful hope knowing the new life that awaits us.”
