Bishop Burbidge Reflects on God's Precious Gift

larger font

“By the power of the Holy Spirit, He was born of the Virgin Mary and became man.”

In his monthly column in the December issue of the NC Catholics magazine, the Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge reminds us that the sentence cited above from the Creed, which we recite at Mass, proclaims central truths of our faith. He notes that, in the birth of Jesus, God gives us His most precious gift, “as He perfectly reveals himself in His Word and in the Sacraments, most especially in the gift of the Eucharist.”

“The gift that Jesus is for the world,” Bishop Burbidge writes, “is celebrated when we reflect in our lives a profound respect for the sacredness of all human life. The humanity which Jesus embraced in the womb of the Virgin is humanity worthy of honor, respect and love.” Bishop Burbidge explains that each of us is precious in the sight of God “because of the humanity that every woman, man and child shares with the Son of Mary, who is the Son of God.”

In his Christmas letter to the faithful of the Diocese of Raleigh, Bishop Burbidge writes, “Our faith in the power of Jesus is reflected as we allow the truths of Christmas to penetrate our lives each day; as we stay ever close to Him in prayer, Word and Sacrament; and as we imitate His humble service. He is the hope that never disappoints!”
