On September 19, Catechetical Sunday, the Diocesan Office of Evangelization and Catechesis presented the Mary Dowling Master Catechist of the Year Award to Camille Grupy of Good Shepherd Parish in Hope Mills. The Award was presented at a Mass celebrated at Good Shepherd by the Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge, Bishop of Raleigh.
A master catechist for 19 years, Mrs. Grupy was described by her former Pastor Fr. Than N. Nguyen as “tireless in her efforts to echo the Good News to any and all who will listen.”
While serving as an elementary school teacher in the Cumberland County school system, Mrs. Grupy has been involved as a developer, director and educator in multiple ministries in her parish, including the parish bereavement committee, outreach to children in orphanages and women in homeless shelters, the Landings ministry for returning Catholics, RCIA and much more.
A colleague who recommended Mrs. Grupy for the award wrote, “Many times a group of us will be talking about how we came to be involved in ministry, and we all agree it’s because Camille asked us to help.”
In his homily, Bishop Burbidge said, “There were many kind words expressed on Camille’s behalf, but perhaps these summarize them best: ‘Camille has helped me to deepen my knowledge of our faith and, more importantly, helped me to be a better follower of Jesus Christ.’ Isn’t that the chief responsibility of all parents, catechists and all those involved in the important work of transmitting our faith? Thank you, Camille, for your example. Sincere congratulations to you!”
Instituted in 2006, the Mary Dowling Award is presented annually to a Master Catechist who exemplifies a commitment to excellence in catechesis and a dedication to service. Past Award recipients are Sr. Barbara Marie Cady, S.U., Infant of Prague, Jacksonville; Mary Hood Hart, St. Brendan the Navigator, Shallotte; Carole Sears, St. Mary, Goldsboro; and Helen Hudson, Holy Cross, Durham.
