On September 11, Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge presided at Mass with Rite of Candidacy for Permanent Diaconate Aspirants at Saint Mary Parish in Goldsboro. This is the first class for the Diaconate being offered in Spanish in the Diocese of Raleigh.
Nine Applicants were accepted into the second phase of the Diaconate as Aspirants:
- Jose Juan Banda – Sacred Heart Cathedral, Raleigh
- Alberto Enrique Blanco-Lara – St. Peter, Greenville
- Juan Carlos Campos – St. Patrick, Fayetteville
- Alejandro Carbajal – St. Raphael the Archangel, Raleigh
- Gustavo Castro-Reynoso – St. Stephen, Sanford
- Gerry Lemus – St. Elizabeth of Hungary, Raeford
- Jose Mendoza – Catholic Community of Bertie County, Windsor
- Andres Rivera – St. Catherine of Siena, Wake Forest
- Luis Alfonso Royo-Camacho – St. Thomas More, Chapel Hill
The Diaconate process takes five years and includes six levels of discernment: Applicant, Aspirant, Candidate, Lector, Acolyte and Permanent Deacon. The Diocese has 55 Permanent Deacons, thirty of whom attended the Mass.
Bishop Burbidge invited each candidate to the altar to declare his intentions of preparation to assume ministry within the Church and to give faithful service to Christ the Lord. The Bishop encouraged the candidates to “allow quality time every day to pray, be filled, and be excited so you can listen to the Lord and His Word because He will speak to your heart.” He continued, “The Lord promises, most especially through the celebration of the Eucharist, that He will be with you always to nourish you, to sustain you, and to guide you today and forever.”
“We are delighted to have our first entirely Spanish speaking formation program with the hope of providing more ministers of the Gospel for the large Spanish speaking portion of our Diocese,” reflected Very Reverend James F. Garneau, V.F., Ph.D., Director, Office of the Permanent Diaconate.
