NC Bishops Request Action Against Senate Abortion Amendment
Following the July 4 recess, the U.S. Senate is expected to take up the National Defense Authorization Act for 2011 (S. – 3280). While in committee, on May 27 an amendment put forth by Sen. Roland Burris (D-IL) was approved on a 15-12 vote that would overturn current law prohibiting military health care facilities from performing elective abortions. The ban has been in effect since 1995.
The Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge, Bishop of Raleigh, and the Most Reverend Peter J. Jugis, Bishop of Charlotte, are asking Catholics in North Carolina to contact North Carolina Senators Richard Burr and Kay Hagan, requesting them to oppose the Burris Amendment.
The Bishops’ letter and information on how to contact North Carolina’s two senators are available at www.CatholicVoiceNC.org.
