Action Requested on Pending Health Care Vote
The U.S. House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on the pending (Senate version) of health care reform on Sunday. Catholics are being asked to contact their U.S. Senators and U.S. House member as soon as possible before the vote to register opposition to the bill as it currently stands. You will find information on how to contact your federal legislators by going to: www.usccb.org/healthcare/UPDATED-bulletin-insert.pdf. The document provides a way to contact lawmakers by email and phone. It also provides a sample message you can send.
There have been misleading comments in recent weeks whether or not the Senate version of the bill allows federal funds to be used for elective abortions. The bill under consideration does allow for federal funding of elective abortions. The US Conference of Catholic Bishops has issued an advisory on this question that you can access at http://www.usccb.org/healthcare/030410facts.pdf.
