Bishop Burbidge Appoints Hispanic Youth Ministry Director
The Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge has named Mr. Ricardo A. Veloz as the new Coordinator of Hispanic Youth Ministry for the Diocese of Raleigh. Born in Monterey, Mexico, Mr. Veloz came to the U.S. in 1996.
In his announcement of the appointment, Bishop Burbidge described Mr. Veloz as a “gifted teacher, retreat leader, and author of workshops which assist teens in developing their Catholic faith and using leadership skills.” Mr. Veloz also serves in national Hispanic Youth Ministry leadership as the Vice-president of the National Network of Pastoral Juvenil Hispana (La RED).
Mr. Veloz says that one of his goals is “collaboration to integrate the formation of all the youth of our Diocese in our Catholic faith, and to make the Hispanic youth feel welcome as valued members of the Church.” He will be working closely with Mr. Patrick Diener, newly hired Director of Youth Ministry for the Diocese of Raleigh, to achieve this goal.
“I hope as well to spend the majority of my time among the people of the Diocese,” he said. “The way to reach young people is to reach their families, and I plan to work closely with pastors throughout the Diocese to educate, form and inform Hispanic families, so they can contribute to the formation and involvement in Church activities of their children.”
Mr. Veloz is bilingual and married with three children, ages 14, 11 and 3. For the last ten years, he has served in Diocesan Hispanic Youth Ministry leadership in the Diocese of Charlotte.
