Diocesan Catholic Conference Set for October 23-24

The Diocese of Raleigh will hold a Catholic Convocation October 23-24 at Saint Raphael the Archangel Church in Raleigh. The gathering is for everyone involved in any form of ministry in the Diocese. The Convocation theme is “Catechesis and the Proclamation of the World.”

The Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge will be Principal Celebrant and Homilist at the 9:00 AM Mass on October 24, with Most Reverend Gerald F. Kicanas, Bishop of Tucson, concelebrating. Bishop Kicanas, who serves as the Vice President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), is the keynote speaker at the event.

Bishop Kicanas was ordained a Priest in 1967 for the Archdiocese of Chicago. He was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese in 1995 and appointed coadjutor Bishop of Tucson in 2001. He was appointed the sixth Bishop of Tucson in 2003 by Pope John Paul II.  In addition to his position as Vice President of the USCCB, Bishop Kicanas serves as a member of the Committee for Migration and is the former Chair of the USCCB Communications Committee and former Chair of the Diaconate Committee. He currently serves as the Episcopal advisor to the National Association for Lay Ministry.

Other Convocation presenters Mr. Pedro Rubalcava and Mrs. Donna Glaser. Mr. Rubalcava, who will provide the Spanish keynote, is currently Director of Hispanic Ministries for Oregon Catholic Press. Mrs. Glaser, who will open the Convocation Friday evening, is Associate Director of Marketing for RCL Benziger and a recipient of the National Catholic Education Association’s Religious Education Excellence Award.

In addition to the main presenters, the Convocation will feature three sets of workshop sessions, covering a range of ministerial topics in English and Spanish. Examples include: “Lectio Divina: Transforming our Spiritual Lives in Four Easy Steps,” “Becoming a Marriage Building Church,” “Creating a Culture of Discernment,” and “Habits of Highly Effective Catechists.”

Registration is available online until close of business October 20. Walk-in registration is also available at a post registration deadline cost of $70.
