Year of St. Paul Closing Mass June 28th

Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge will preside at the Year of St. Paul Closing Mass to be celebrated at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Sunday, June 28 at 10:30 am.

The year-long celebration, which began June 28, 2008, commemorated the two-thousandth anniversary of the birth of St. Paul. Proclaimed by Pope Benedict XVI, the Jubilee celebration provided Christians with an opportunity to closely study the teachings of the Church’s first outstanding theologian.

The Diocese of Raleigh provided a number of information and reflection opportunities throughout the year for Catholics to more deeply understand the teachings of St. Paul.

Year of St. Paul Events Included:

  • Praying with St. Paul: Daily Reflections was purchased for Catholic Center employees.

  • Resources compiled and published on St. Paul webpage on the diocese website

  • Bishop Burbidge’ Letter – June 5, 2008 announcing the inauguration of the Year distributed to all pastors.

  • Inaugural Mass to celebrate the Year of St. Paul, June 28, 2008 at St. Paul parish, New Bern.

  • Distribution of St. Paul Poster and packs of Holy Cards to every parish and school in the diocese.

  • Gift of book from Bishop Burbidge - St. Paul: Called to Conversion by Fr. Ronald Witherup- distributed to parish directors of faith formation and school principals.

  • Regular series of stories on the Year of St. Paul in NC Catholics.

  • Prof. Paul Griffiths presented talk on St. Paul at the Emmaus Conference (October 18, 2008).

  • iPaul Series of podcast talks launched on website.

  • A variety of parish Bible studies and courses on the Letters of St. Paul were promoted on the web and in NC Catholics.

  • Ecumenical Program and Prayer Service on the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul (January 25, 2009) featuring Prof. Paul Griffiths and Bishop Burbidge sponsored by the diocesan Ecumenical Office and Campus Ministry.

  • Talks by Fr. Jonathan Woodhall at Cathedral and other small parishes in the diocese.

  • Lenten usage of The Stations of the Cross according to St. Paul promoted.

  • Booklet from the USCCB. Celebrations of the Word in the Year of St. Paul with Meditations of Pope Benedict XVI distributed to Staff and Deanery Coordinators of the Dept. of Evangelization & Catechesis

  • Lenten Retreat on St. Paul by Sr. Jeanne Morgan .
