The Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge ordained John Vic Gournas to the Order of Deacon in a solemn ceremony, June 6, at St. Luke the Evangelist Church in Raleigh. More than 250 people attended the Mass, including Deacon Gournas’ sisters, Toni Davis and Liz Taylor, family and friends.
A native of Raleigh, Deacon Gournas is the son of Johnny and Helen Gournas, both of whom passed away. A native of Sanderson High School in Raleigh, he holds a bachelor’s of science and a master’s of science degree from North Carolina State University.
In his homily, Bishop Burbidge spoke of the support Deacon Gournas has received from his family, friends, Diocesan clergy and faithful and from his fellow seminarians. “What a profound blessing to know that you are never alone,” Bishop Burbidge said. “You know you can depend on the powerful intercession of Mary our Mother who will walk with you each and every day,” the Bishop added.
Noting that the call Deacon Gournas received is “a pure gift from God,” the Bishop explained, “It is a call to imitate, as deacon and God-willing soon as priest, Jesus Christ, the Good Shepherd who came to serve and not to be served.”
Deacon Gournas will serve a summer assignment as Deacon at Saint Catherine of Siena Parish in Wake Forest, before returning to Saint Charles for his final year of Theology in preparation for Priesthood Ordination next June.
