On May 29th, Dr. Patrick O’Connell delivered the third installment of the 2008-2009 Bishop’s Lecture Series. Speaking to more than one hundred attendees at St. Thomas More Church in Chapel Hill, Dr. O’Connell, an internist with Duke Health Care who is certified by the National Catholic Center for Bioethics, presented his talk in two parts. First, he summarized the basic themes of Pope John Paul II’s Theology of the Body.

In part two, drawing on this theology and on Donum Vitae, a 1987 instruction from the U.S. Bishops, Dr. O’Connell explained the various treatments available for infertility and considered them in the light of Catholic teaching.

The 2009-2010 Bishop’s Lecture Series is expected to commence in the fall.
