Bishops Ask for Support of NC House Bill 776 on Bullying
May 22, 2009
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
We seek your continued assistance with Senate Bill 526 (SB526), the “School Violence Protection Act” (also known as the “Bullying Bill”). The North Carolina Senate narrowly passed their version of the bill by a vote of 26 to 22 on May 6. It is scheduled to be heard by the House Education Committee on Tuesday, May 26, at 11 a.m.
We wholeheartedly support the goal of this bill: to ensure that NO student or school employee is subjected to any form of bullying or harassing behavior. We believe there should be NO EXCEPTIONS to the goal of this bill. Everyone is entitled to his or her human dignity as someone created in the image and likeness of God and bullying or harassment should never be tolerated.
A bill introduced by the House (HB776) prevents ALL forms of school violence and has 62 sponsors or co-sponsors, a majority of the House membership. We endorse this version of legislation which, if passed, will protect all children and employees from bullying and harassing behavior.
We ask you to contact the members of the House Education Committee by no later than 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 26, and ask them to vote in favor of the language of HB776 to protect all school children and employees from bullying or harassing behavior.
