On March 22, St. Bernadette Catholic Church in
Fuquay-Varina broke ground for a Parish Learning Center, the first stage of a phased expansion of the parish campus.
The Learning Center is expected to be completed in
November and will provide much needed space for faith
formation classes and parish meetings. The next phase will be expansion of the church building, followed by a second learning center, a family life center and a free-standing chapel for Eucharistic Adoration.
The Reverend Monsignor David D. Brockman, Vicar
General of the Diocese of Raleigh, presided at the liturgy for the groundbreaking. The master of ceremonies was Tisha Powell of WTVD Channel 11. John Byrne, mayor of Fuquay-Varina and a St. Bernadette parishioner, was present with other civic officials, the architect and the builder, and Arthur Wesche, Director of Property and Construction for the Diocese of Raleigh.
A Mexican meal was prepared by Hispanic parishioners. Fr. Mark Betti, Pastor of St. Bernadette, praised the support of all his parishioners for the ongoing expansion. Referring to the hundreds of youth and
adults whose faith has been formed in the parish social hall, a space not much larger than the tent at the groundbreaking, he said, “What we’ve done under difficult circumstances, this facility will allow us to accomplish under easier circumstances.”
