Bishop Burbidge Provides Precautions For Flu Season

A memo from Msgr. David D. Brockman, Vicar General of the Diocese, on behalf of Bishop Michael F. Burbidge, was sent to Pastors and Pastoral Administrators regarding precautions to be taken during the current outbreak of the H3N2 Influenza Virus.

The precautions include the request that, if ill, Extraordinary Ministers and Altar Servers refrain from liturgical ministry until the sickness has passed.

Noting that the Sign of Peace is no longer an option in the revised Roman Missal, the memo also asks the faithful to exercise prudence and courtesy if they are ill, possibly using a deep bow or a nod of the head in place of a handshake.

The faithful are requested to refrain from receiving the Precious Blood if they are sick. Church teaching holds that, while it is a fuller sign to receive Holy Communion under both species, Christ is truly present, Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in the consecrated host.
