Diocesan Parishioners Provide Assistance to Other Dioceses
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' Subcommittee on Catholic Home Missions announced November 19, 2012, the approval of over $8.4 million in grant funding to aid in evangelization, religious education, ministry training and other support of 84 mission dioceses across the country. More than 40 percent of the dioceses in the U.S. are classified as mission territories, facing great challenges due to the rugged terrain of their location and the poverty of the population they serve.
Funding for the grants come from collections taken up in parishes throughout the country in April of each year. In 2012, parishioners in the Diocese of Raleigh contributed $81,768 to the Appeal.
The national date for the Catholic Home Missions Appeal is the fourth Sunday in April; however, some dioceses take up the Appeal at other times. For more information on the work of the Subcommittee on Catholic Home Missions, visit http://www.usccb.org and search "home missions."
