New Cathedral: A Spiritual Presence to be Celebrated
Parish receptions in Block 2 of the Cathedral Campus Campaign are more than halfway completed. Response to the Campaign, which also benefits the needs of the individual parishes, continues to be strong. Each parish is assigned a Total Campaign Goal, from which the first dollars donated go to the parish’s 2012 Bishop’s Annual Appeal goal. Once that BAA goal is achieved, the parish receives 20 percent of every dollar donated with 80 percent going to the Cathedral Campus Campaign.
One of the parishes taking part in Block 2 is St. Mary Church in Laurinburg. Fr. JaVan Saxon, pastor of the church and a native of North Carolina, said when he was growing up in the 1950s, the Catholic community in the Diocese was less than one percent. He said today growth is continuing to explode and our small cathedral is unable to fulfill its mission as the Mother Church of the Diocese.
In a video interview, Fr. Saxon said the new Holy Name Cathedral will not only serve our needs but those of Catholics for many generations to come.
