On Wednesday, September 5, 2012, members of the Church faithful gathered at Sacred Heart Cathedral to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the ordination of the Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge as a Bishop.

Bishop Burbidge, who was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia in 2002, was installed as the fifth Bishop of Raleigh in August 2006.

Twenty-five priests, including Msgr. David D. Brockman, Vicar General of the Diocese, and the Very Reverend Daniel D. Oschwald, Cathedral Rector, concelebrated the Mass. Three of the concelebrants were close friends of Bishop Burbidge from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

Bishop Burbidge’s homily focused on gratitude to God, as well as thankfulness for brother priests, deacons, consecrated religious, seminarians, colleagues, advisors and friends who welcomed him to the Diocese of Raleigh six years ago.

He spoke of how the word “mystery” surfaced in his mind as he reflected on the past ten years. “It is a mystery to me that, with my weaknesses and limitations, the Lord chose me to be His Bishop,” said Bishop Burbidge. “There is only one thing you can do in the midst of such a mystery: to say ‘yes’ … Here I am Lord.”

For Bishop Burbidge, the mystery unfolded in many ways – from leaving an assignment as Rector of St. Charles Borromeo Seminary to becoming Auxiliary Bishop with more administrative and pastoral responsibilities. He reflected when he was called to Raleigh, the mystery continued to unfold as he left family, friends and all that was familiar to him in Philadelphia.

The constant, he said, was how God’s grace allowed for new and amazing blessings with each new assignment. “The mystery, no doubt, will continue to unfold for all of us,” said Bishop Burbidge in his homily. “Who knows what lies ahead? But we do know this – we have every reason to be confident because, as we have experienced throughout our lives, God is always faithful and supplies the strength that we need.”
