The leadership committee of the Diocesan Council of Women Religious held its quarterly meeting at the Catholic Center on Thursday, August 23, 2012.

Present for the meeting were Sr. Barbara Marie Cady, S.U.; Sr. Shirley Simpson, CSC; Sr. Mary Jean Korejwo, SND;  Sr. Chris Gelling, IHM; Sr. Carol Loughney, IHM; Sr. Theresine Gildea, CDP; Sr. Kieran Williams, IHM; Sr. Ruth Mary Perl, SND;  and Sr. Mary Ann Czaja, SA.

The group discussed its presence at the 2012 Catholic Convocation taking place in October, its upcoming overnight retreat scheduled in November, and the Diocesan Appreciation Day for Religious that will take place September 29 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Raleigh. The day will begin with the celebration of Mass at 10:00 a.m.

The Sisters also met with the Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge, who expressed his gratitude to the Women Religious who are serving the people of the Diocese at this time and those who have ministered to North Carolinians for more some 125 years.

“It is always a blessing to meet with the Council of Women Religious and to benefit from the wisdom and expertise they bring to the pastoral issues of our Diocese,” Bishop Burbidge said.  “Our meetings also provide me with the opportunity to express renewed and deep gratitude to all Women Religious serving in our diocese for the witness of their lives and their generous service to our midst.”

Bishop Burbidge added, “I am blessed by the support of our Sisters and convey my renewed respect and gratitude for the gift they are to me and to all those they serve.”

Currently, there are 43 Women Religious representing 19 Religious Congregations ministering in the Diocese. Women Religious served in North Carolina long before the Holy See erected the Diocese of Raleigh in 1924.
