Bishop Burbidge Celebrates Mass of the Lord’s Supper

The Mass of the Lord’s Supper, celebrated on Holy Thursday evening, begins the Sacred Triduum, the holiest days of the year for the Catholic Church. The Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge celebrated the Mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Raleigh. The Mass was concelebrated by Rev. Msgr. David D. Brockman, Vicar General of the Diocese; Very Rev. Daniel D. Oschwald, Rector of the Cathedral; Rev. Chesco Garcia-Gonzalez, Parochial Vicar of Hispanic Ministry at the Cathedral; and the Very Rev. Jonathan A. Woodhall, Vice-Rector Emeritus of the Cathedral. Deacons were Rev. Mr. Michael Alig and Rev. Mr. Don Maloney.

In his homily, Bishop Burbidge noted the significance of the Lord’s Supper. It was at that gathering with his apostles that Jesus gave us the Institution of the Eucharist and Institution of the Priesthood. He pointed out that in the Gospel of John there is no mention of the familiar words of “My body” and “My blood.”

The Bishop said, “Instead, by highlighting the washing of the feet at the Last Supper, the evangelist (John) compels us to remember the challenge of the Eucharist. We must imitate the humility and love of the One whose body and blood we receive.” In so doing, Bishop Burbidge said, we must be alert to the needs of others. In that way, we will be responding to their spoken or unspoken desires of “Give me Jesus.”

Following the homily, Bishop Burbidge washed the feet of 12 members of the Sacred Heart Cathedral community. At the end of Mass, the Bishop removed the Blessed Sacrament from the main altar and in procession placed it on the Altar of Repose, where Adoration was prayerfully observed until midnight.
