Cardinal Anthony J. Bevilacqua, retired Archbishop of Philadelphia, died Jan. 31, 2012, at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, where he resided. He was 88.

"Cardinal Bevilacqua gave his life in service to Our Lord Jesus and His Church," Bishop Michael F. Burbidge said. "He was tireless in his pastoral outreach to the faithful entrusted to his care. I will be forever grateful for all his goodness to me and strive daily to imitate his zeal in preaching the Gospel."

The Bishop asked that all the faithful in the Diocese of Raleigh pray for Cardinal Bevilacqua and his eternal peace as well as for his family, friends and all those in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, especially at this time.
