Opening of Diocesan Phase of Cause for Father Price Attracts Media
The story of the Diocese of Raleigh preparing to open the Cause for Beatification and Canonization of Father Thomas F. Price has received widespread media attention in the Diocese and throughout the United States. The announcement of the opening of the Diocesan phase of the Cause to be held March 9, 2012, was announced by the Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge on January 17.
The story was covered by the Associated Press and received wide coverage in Wilmington, NC, the birth place of Father Price, the first native North Carolinian to be ordained to the Priesthood. Father Price, who came to be known as the “Tar Heel Apostle,” set out as his goal to spread Catholicism throughout the state. In 1897, Father Price purchased 400 acres of land two miles west of downtown Raleigh in a community known as Nazareth. Today, 39 acres of that purchase remain and currently houses the Catholic Center. It is the site where the planned Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral will be constructed, continuing the vision of Father Price.
