Bishop Burbidge Invites Faithful to Join in January Pro-Life Events
January 2012 marks the 39th anniversary of the controversial U.S. Supreme Court decision allowing abortion in the United States. Since 1979, Catholic faithful have gathered in Washington, DC, for the National Prayer Vigil for Life, celebrated at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception on the evening before the anniversary date of the Roe v. Wade Decision.
Each year, attendance at the Vigil has grown, with Bishops from throughout the United States joining with their faithful to pray for life. Many then take part in the National March for Life on January 22, the anniversary date. Last year, an estimated 300,000 pro-life advocates participated in the March, including several thousand from the Diocese of Raleigh and the Diocese of Charlotte. Prior to the March, North Carolina Catholics attended the annual North Carolina Mass for Life at the Basilica, celebrated by the Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge. Bishop Peter J. Jugis was Homilist.
With January 22 occurring on Sunday this year, the Vigil for Life will be celebrated on the evening of the 22nd, with the North Carolina Mass for Life and the National March for Life taking place on January 23. The North Carolina Mass will be celebrated at the Basilica at 11:30 AM with Bishop Burbidge the Homilist.
Catholics in the Diocese of Raleigh are also invited to participate in the annual pro-life events taking place in Raleigh on January 14, 2012. The events are noted in a letter from Bishop Burbidge to Diocesan faithful that will be available in this week’s parish bulletins.
