On Sunday, November 20, 2011, Immaculate Conception Parish in Clinton broke ground for a new activity center on land adjacent to the church. The Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge presided at the 11:00 am Solemnity of Christ the King Mass prior to the groundbreaking and blessing ceremony.
Concelebrants at the Mass, held outdoors to accommodate the parish community, were Father Mark J. Betti, Pastor of Immaculate Conception, and Father Robert P. Staley, Parochial Vicar, St. Bernadette, Fuquay-Varina. Pastoral Associates Sister Theresine Gildea, C.D.P., and Sister Maxine Tancraitor, C.D.P, were also in attendance.
"Today, as individuals, families and a parish community" Bishop Burbidge said in his homily, "we are invited to rededicate ourselves to the Lord, to claim Him as our ruler and King and to promise that nothing or no one will ever take precedence over him."
Addressing the parish’s planned new facility, Bishop Burbidge noted, "The architect and builder of your new Family Life Center would certainly agree that no matter how beautiful a building may be, it does not endure unless it can rely on that which is holding it up. Obviously, this refers to the foundation." In his homily, Bishop Burbidge said if Christ is to be our King and our Foundation, then we must profess Jesus as Lord of Life; proclaim the Truth of the Gospel; let Christ, not sin, reign in our lives; imitate Him and have faith in the midst of life’s crosses.
Following Mass, the Bishop announced that the activity center will be named Father Thomas Frederick Price Family Life Center. It will provide space for a social hall for parish life events, and rooms for meetings and Faith Formation classes.
An estimated 500 people attended the celebration. The architect, Mr. Ryland Edwards, who was the architect for Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Rocky Mount, and Mr. Mark Johnson of G and G Builders, who is also the builder for the current project at St. Eugene, Wendell, and the Honorable Lew Starling, mayor of Clinton, were also in attendance. Construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of June 2012.
