NC Bishops Request Support for Marriage Amendment
The Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge, Bishop of Raleigh, and the Most Reverend Peter J. Jugis, Bishop of Charlotte, are asking the faithful in their respective Dioceses to contact their state lawmakers to encourage them to vote in favor of the Marriage Amendment that will come before both houses of the State Legislature next week. The Amendment would affirm in the North Carolina Constitution the traditional definition of marriage. If approved by both houses of the Legislature, the proposed Amendment would be placed before the voters on the November 2012 election ballot.
In a letter to subscribers of Catholic Voice NC, the Bishops request Catholics in the state to telephone their senator and representative by Friday, September 9. The special session of the Legislature is set to convene on September 12. Bishop Burbidge and Bishop Jugis also ask Catholics to attend a Marriage Rally that will take place on the grass field behind the Legislature building known as Halifax Mall on Monday, September 12, at 10:30 a.m.
The letter is available on the www.CatholicVoiceNC.org website, with contact information for the state lawmakers.
