larger font

The young Catholics taking part in the Diocesan pilgrimage to World Youth Day 2011 spent Sunday, August 14 at the Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in France. The group of 64 joined Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge for the celebration of Mass at the Grotto of the Shrine. That was followed by the Stations of the Cross. Sunday evening, the pilgrims took part in a candlelight procession at the Shrine.

On Monday, the Diocesan pilgrims will begin their bus trip that will take them to Madrid, Spain, site of this year’s World Youth Day. The five-day event will begin on Tuesday with Pope Benedict XVI arriving on Thursday, when he will be greeted by hundreds of thousands of young Catholics from around the world. The international religious event will conclude on Sunday, August 21 with the Holy Father celebrating the Closing Mass.

The Diocesan pilgrims will be posting pictures and videos on the virtual pilgrimage site. Several will be contributing blogs and reflections of their experience. Bishop Burbidge will be providing daily Tweets. His Tweets are available @bishopburbidge. For those not on Twitter, Tweets can be obtained via text by texting follow BishopBurbidge to 40404.

Pictures and blogs will also be available on a special virtual pilgrimage website, accessible from the Diocesan home page by clicking on the World Youth Day 2011 button on the right side of the home page.
