Bishop Burbidge Congratulates New Bishop of Savannah
The Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge has extended congratulations to the Most Reverend Gregory Hartmayer, OFM Conv., on his appointment as the 14th Bishop of Savannah. Announcement of the appointment was made July 19, 2011, upon the Holy Father’s acceptance of the resignation of the Most Reverend J. Kevin Boland, 76, who has been Bishop of Savannah since 1995. Bishop-elect Hartmayer has served as Pastor of St. John Vianney Parish in Lithia Springs, Georgia, since 2010.
“While I personally do not know Bishop Hartmayer, I have heard wonderful comments regarding his priestly ministry and pastoral zeal,” Bishop Burbidge said. “I am sure he and his service as bishop will be wonderful gifts for the priests, religious and laity in the Diocese of Savannah as he builds upon the tremendous work of Bishop Boland over the years.
“With my brother bishops, I welcome Bishop-elect Hartmayer to his new position in the Province of Atlanta and assure him of my prayerful and fraternal support,” Bishop Burbidge said. “I ask all in the Diocese of Raleigh to pray for Bishop-elect Hartmayer and Bishop Boland at this new and exciting time in their lives.”
The Atlanta Province comprises the Archdiocese of Atlanta and the Dioceses of Raleigh, Charlotte, Charleston and Savannah.
