NC Bishops Call for Support of No Public Funding for Abortion Bill
The Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge, Bishop of Raleigh, and the Most Reverend Peter J. Jugis, Bishop of Charlotte, are asking Catholics in North Carolina to contact their U.S. Representatives urging support of House Resolution (HR) 3, the No Funding for Taxpayer Abortion Act. The proposed bill would also guarantee conscience protection rights of health care providers.
In testimony before the Subcommittee on the Constitution House Judiciary Committee, Mr. Richard Doerflinger, Associate Director of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Pro-Life Secretariat, said in his opening statement that “H.R. 3 will write into permanent law a policy on which there has been strong popular and congressional agreement for over 35 years: The federal government should not use tax dollars to support or promote elective abortion.” Mr. Doerflinger cited two recent polls conducted by CNN and Quinnipiac University that showed the American public opposed taxpayer funding of abortions by 61% and 72% respectively.
