On Sunday, March 28, the Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge celebrated Mass and conferred the Sacrament of Confirmation to 68 adults at St. Andrew the Apostle Church in Apex. Fr. David Fitzgerald, S.A., Pastor of St. Andrew Parish; Fr. Joseph Brennan, O.S.F.S., Pastor of Holy Infant in Durham; Fr. Raymond M. Thu, CMC, Chaplain of the Vietnamese Catholic Community at St. Joseph in Raleigh; and Fr. Daniel Oschwald, Rector of Sacred Heart Cathedral in Raleigh, concelebrated the Mass assisted by Deacon Daniel Hoffert.

Those receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation represented 19 parishes from the Newton Grove, Piedmont, Fayetteville and Raleigh deaneries. Those confirmed are practicing Catholics who have previously received the Sacraments of Baptism and Eucharist. Through the Sacrament of Confirmation, they have completed full Initiation into the Catholic faith.

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

“Baptism, the Eucharist, and the sacrament of Confirmation together constitute the ‘sacraments of Christian Initiation,’ whose unity must be safeguarded. It must be explained to the faithful that the reception of the sacrament of Confirmation is necessary for the completion of baptismal grace. For by the sacrament of Confirmation, the [faithful] are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed.” (CCC# 1285).

In his homily, Bishop Burbidge likened the confirmands to the Israelites. “Your faith journeys no doubt had moments of doubt and confusion. Yet the Lord spoke to your heart and called you to a new life, a new way of living,” said Bishop Burbidge. “The promise the Lord our God made to the Israelites is the same one He made to you: Through it all He is present and will sustain us. Today, we join you in celebrating God’s faithfulness to His promises!”

On Sunday, April 10th, Bishop Burbidge will celebrate Mass and confer the Sacrament of Confirmation with at Immaculate Conception Church in Wilmington at 3:00pm.
