St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Raleigh has been recognized for its environmentally-conscious construction of its three most recent buildings. On Monday, January 31, representatives from the United States Green Building Council presented three Gold Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Awards to the parish at a ceremony attended by the Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge, North Carolina 4th District Congressman David Price, Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker and Mr. Dee Freeman, Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Receiving the awards on behalf of the parish were Father Mark Reamer, OFM, Pastor, and Very Reverend John F. O’Connor, Minister Provincial of the Holy Name Province.

The LEED Award is a nationally recognized benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. In his remarks at the ceremony, Father Reamer thanked the parish community and all involved in the creation of the three buildings, calling it a testament to the parish’s long history of concern for the environment. One of the features of the construction is that the buildings utilize a green cleaning program that avoids the use of harmful chemicals and uses paper products with recycled content. Another is that all concrete walkways and parking areas reflect sunlight and avoid solar heat gain. The three new buildings are the Siena Center for Lifelong Learning, which houses the middle school; Elizabeth Hall; and St. Mary of the Angels Chapel, where the ceremony was held.
