Bishop Burbidge Calls for Support of U.S. H.R. 358
The Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge has endorsed a January 20 statement of Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, Chairman of the Bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities. Cardinal DiNardo urged members of Congress to support and co-sponsor the Protect Life Act (H.R. 358), sponsored by Reps. Joseph Pitts (R-PA) and Dan Lipisnki (D-IL) and 88 others.
The proposed bill would bring the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) into line with polices on abortion and conscience protection rights existing in other federal health programs. Specifically, H.R. 358 would prevent funds under PPACA, the new health care reform act, from subsidizing abortion or health-care plans that cover abortion. It would also protect health-care providers who decline to participate in abortion procedures.
In his endorsement, Bishop Burbidge called on U.S. House members whose districts represent people in the Diocese of Raleigh to support the Protect Life Act when it reaches the House floor for a vote. “This bill offers another important legislative addition toward building a culture of life, which will reflect the sacredness of human life and the dignity of each and every person,” Bishop Burbidge stated. “Thus, I encourage you to contact your legislator to support this bill in the service of the gift of life and in respect for the sacred duty of health-care providers to protect human life from the moment of conception to natural death.”
