Letter from Bishops Burbidge and Jugis on approval of 'Choose Life' license plates

The following is a letter from Bishop Michael Burbidge and Bishop Peter Jugis (Diocese of Charlotte) regarding the approval of “Choose Life” license plates:

March 14, 2016

Dear CVNC members,

The recent federal court decision to reverse a previous ruling which struck down “Choose Life” license plates is wonderful news for Catholics and all people of good will who advocate on behalf of the unborn and vulnerable.

While we may live in a society in which tens of millions of children are lost to the violence of abortion, as members of a free society who are protected by the U.S. Constitution, it is critical that we have the ability to express our beliefs and witness to the Catholic Faith we hold dear. This right is fundamental to American principles.

It should be noted, however, that some media outlets are characterizing the “Choose Life” license plates as “anti-abortion.” We certainly stand in proud opposition to abortion, since it is by nature the killing of an unborn child. The root of our belief is not merely in opposition to abortion, but in the belief that all human life is sacred and must be protected. Being pro-life is a weightier call than being simply “anti-abortion.”

Thank you for your continued pro-life witness and for all that you do to proclaim the truth of the Catholic Faith in your community.
