Bishop Emeritus Celebrates 51 Years of Priesthood
Sunday, December 17, is the 51st anniversary of ordination for Bishop Emeritus F. Joseph Gossman. He was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Baltimore in Rome in 1955. In July 1968, he was named an auxiliary bishop of Baltimore. He was installed as the fourth Bishop of Raleigh on May 19, 1975, and served until his retirement in June 2006.
Looking back, Bishop Gossman credits the pastor of his childhood parish and a 7th-grade teacher who "was very strong in recommending religious vocations" with influencing his decision to become a priest.
"Along with all the diocese," said Bishop Michael Burbidge, "I extend congratulations and prayerful best wishes to Bishop Gossman on this anniversary."
