Diocesan faithful give $24,791 following April earthquake in Ecuador

Parishioners from throughout the Diocese of Raleigh donated a total of almost $25,000 to Catholic Relief Services to assist earthquake recovery in Ecuador.

Dr. Carolyn Woo, president and CEO of CRS, recently sent a letter to Bishop Michael F. Burbidge expressing her thanks.

She wrote: “I extend my deepest appreciation to you and the people of the Diocese of Raleigh for your generous contribution to CRS. Your gift will have a profound impact … I am grateful for your steadfast support of our mission.”

In April, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the northern coast of Ecuador. According to Catholic News Service, the earthquake, and its 150 aftershocks, left more than 670 people dead, 5,000 injured and 80,000 homeless.

Special collections were held between April 21 and May 15 at parishes throughout the diocese.
