Catholic Campaign for Human Development

ver en español   larger font

The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) is the Catholic Church's domestic anti-poverty, social justice program. Its mission is to address the root causes of poverty in America through promotion and support of community-controlled, self-help organizations and through transformative education.

Founded in 1969, CCHD's pastoral strategy is to provide education to justice as well as provide the support and funds needed by those seeking to help themselves out of poverty and injustice. This ministry of the Church provides an opportunity for all Catholics to respond to the pervasive poverty in the United States. It calls Catholics to know and live the social tradition of the Church and is a ministry rooted in our baptism and faith commitment.

The national grants, economic development, and education for justice programs of CCHD are implemented in conjunction with each diocese and are supported by the local parish collection taken each year. The Diocese of Raleigh takes up its annual collection each year in November.

CCHD is Committed to:

Rooting

continuing to root CCHD in the Gospel and in Catholic Social Teaching, which transcends political ideologies;

Reviewing

reviewing their systems to assure that all funds are used in accord with the moral and social teachings of the Church;

Renewing

making changes and renewing those systems as necessary;

Recommitting

asking the Bishops in their November meeting to recommit to their mission of helping people help themselves.

Diocesan Local CCHD Grants

All monies collected for CCHD are used for outreach programs. Seventy-five percent of collected funds are sent to Washington for national awards to dioceses. Twenty-five percent of the of the collection is used by the diocese to award grants on a local basis. A diocesan CCHD Committee reviews the grants. Grants are awarded in October at the annual CCHD dinner. The grants are available for all groups regardless of religious or non-religious affiliation.
