News and Announcements

  • We have created a calendar to assist Catholics in the Diocese of Raleigh to learn about special days, saints, and events which call us to reflect on Life, Justice, and Peace. The calendar is now complete for August 2010-July 2011. A Spanish copy of the calendar is attached as well. The information in this calendar can be useful for Catholic Schools, Faith Formation Offices, Bulletin Editors, Parish Social Concerns volunteers, Pro-life volunteers, and Family Life Coordinators. We pray that the calendar will cause reflection, education, and advocacy throughout the school year beginning this month and continuing for one full calendar year. Download a copy here. English: Word | PDF; Spanish: Word | PDF
  • Applications for the diocesan Catholic Campaign for Human Development local grants are now available. This year we are extending the deadline to Friday, September 17. Please note the criteria for grants on the application, particularly page 5, which requires the necessary endorsement by the local Catholic Pastor. • According to Justice for Immigrants (JFI), the Catholic Campaign for Immigration reform (http://www.justiceforimmigrants.org/), now is the time to continue building legislative capacity around the issue of Immigration Reform.

The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act (DREAM Act), is a piece of legislation that has been introduced both in the U.S House and U.S Senate. This proposed bill would give certain undocumented students a path to citizenship. In order to qualify for the DREAM Act, the student must have:
    • Entered the country before the age of 16
    • Graduated from a U.S. high school or obtained a GED
    • A good moral character (no criminal record)
    • At least five years of continuous presence in the US
    • Must be between the ages of 12 and 35 at time of bill enactment

If the student meets the above requirements, once the DREAM Act passes, the student will be given a period of six years to either obtain a two-year college degree or serve in the military for at least 2 years. During this six year period, the student will be granted a "conditional" status. If the student meets all of the requirements at the end of the 6-year period, he/she will be granted permanent residency and could then become a U.S. citizen. Please contact the North Carolina senators and your congressional representative and ask them to co-sponsor the DREAM Act.
